My name is Lauren Lashmet. I am sophomore at Duke University from Chicago, Illinois, majoring in Public Policy. I took this course with the intention of improving my photography and video editing skills, however, my journey through this semester has provided me with far more life knowledge than I ever could have anticipated.
Having the opportunity to meet with formerly homeless people such as Robin has shown me a new face to homelessness. Before, I was not quite sure what to believe when surrounded by stereotypes about homeless people. However, through my discussions with Robin, I have learned that most homeless people exist the way they do not because they are lazy, but because they are facing extreme adversity and misfortune. Seeing Robin overcome the majority of her struggles and be so thankful for every day has been one of the greatest gifts of this experience.
