I am a Duke student from Covington, Kentucky. I will graduate in 2012 with a major in Cultural Anthropology and a Certificate in Global Health. When signing up for this class on Documentary Engagement, I hoped to learn skills I could transfer to future internships abroad documenting human rights issues. I wanted to learn how to photograph victims of social injustice. After many visits and dinners at Dove House, I began to realize that the women in my photographs were not victims so much as change agents. They had overcome many obstacles in their struggles to live with dignity and self-worth. Hearing their stories led me to shape this documentary project into a hopeful portrait of homelessness. I hope this work will inform policymakers and contribute toward ending homelessness in Durham County.
